International visitors will need to hire a local guide to lead them to the falls, typically local guides are charged around $5. Guides are important because the trails are not well-marked and can easily be confused with village pathways. Local guides not only ensure you don’t get lost, but they’re particularly helpful during the rainy season when the trails can become muddy and difficult to navigate through. They assist with carrying heavy luggage, help you pass through challenging sections of trails, and share interesting details about the history of the falls, surrounding environment and the cultural history of that reside around mount Elgon.
