To start the hike, visitors must report at the designated starting point, located on the side facing the senior quarters, near the town’s golf course. The guides available at the base may not appear very professional but are skilled in climbing the rock.

People with a slight fear of heights, are advised to avoid looking down during the climb, but once you reach the top, you get the chance to enjoy the beautiful views.

However, a tragic accident occurred when a group of students fell over 4,000 feet from the cable car, resulting in their deaths. The students’ bodies were severely damaged, and the negative publicity following the incident led Airtel to suspend the cable car service.

Now, a Chinese company has partnered with a local company to bring a new cable car system to Tororo Rock. This updated cable car will allow visitors who are unable to climb the rock to reach the top in just a few minutes.

How to Get to Tororo For Tororo Rock Hiking

The easiest way to travel to Tororo from Kampala is by taking a bus or a taxi (minibus). While Tororo does have an airstrip, it is rarely used due to the limited number of flights to the district. By road, the journey takes about three hours, provided there is no traffic.

The drive to Tororo passes through towns like Jinja, Iganga, and Bugiri. Currently, most taxis heading to Tororo can be found inside Kampala new and old tax park or Banda Trading Centre, located just outside Kampala. The transport fare between Kampala and Tororo is approximately 20,000 to 30,000 Uganda Shillings.

For international travelers, it is recommended to use a tour operator or hire a private vehicle for the trip from Kampala or Entebbe Airport. Although this option is more expensive, it offers greater convenience and flexibility.

Climbing Tororo Rock is not organized to high professional standards. The local district has hired a company owned by Phoebe Otaala to manage the activity, charging a fee of 20,000 shillings per person. This fee covers a tour guide who will assist you during the climb to the top.

However, no hiking gear or sticks are provided or sold at the starting point. While you don’t need specialized gear for the hike, bringing your own will make the experience more comfortable. There is a safe parking area at the trailhead.

The trail can be a bit slippery, especially during the rainy season, and may have overgrown vegetation. However, there are plenty of rocky outcrops to hold on to, even in the more difficult sections.

Some of the smaller rocks on the trail are sharp, so be careful not to step on them incorrectly or fall unexpectedly. Caution is important!
