Gorilla trekking is available in four sectors: Buhoma (north), Ruhija (east), Rushaga, and Nkuringo (both in the south). To do gorilla trekking, you must be 15 years or older and have a valid gorilla trekking permit from Uganda wildlife Authority. It’s recommended to book your permit at least 3–4 months early, especially during the high season, as permits sell out fast.
Each trekking experience starts with a briefing at the park offices. Visitors are grouped and guided by armed trained game rangers to the forest to search for mountain gorillas. While trekking, you may also see other forest animals like monkeys, baboons, chimpanzees, elephants, and buffaloes, as well as many bird and plant species.
When a group of mountain gorilla is found, while trekking in the forest visitors have one hour to spend with them. During this time, you can take photos, watch them feed, play, or rest, and observe their behavior up close.

The gorilla habituation experience is a rare and unique adventure offered only in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors. Unlike regular trekking, this experience allows visitors to spend up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family as they get used to humans.
Each day only four visitors are allowed to do gorilla habituation on each gorilla habituation group, and only two gorilla habituation groups are available for this activity per day. Due to this limited availability, it’s important to book your permit early with the Uganda Wildlife Authority or through a trusted tour operator.
The day starts with a detailed briefing at the park headquarters. Visitors are grouped and joined by ranger guides, researchers, and conservationists who help track and study the gorillas. During the trek, you may spot animals like forest hogs, buffaloes, elephants, and monkeys, as well as many bird and tree species.
Once the gorillas are found, you get 4 full hours to observe them, take photos, and help the team gently introduce the gorillas to human presence.

During a Batwa experience, local guides from the Batwa community lead you through the forest and share how they used to live. You’ll learn how they made fire using sticks, hunted with bows and arrows, collected honey, and used plants for medicine.
The cultural visit also includes traditional songs and dances. You may also explore Batwa homesteads, see local crafts, and support the community by purchasing handmade items like baskets and jewelry.

Nature walks activity in the park are guided by trained UWA (Uganda Wildlife Authority) park rangers and are offered in all four sectors of Bwindi impenetrable national park.
Nature walks let you enjoy the beauty of the forest on foot. You may come across waterfalls, rivers, beautiful tree species, and wildlife like duikers, monkeys, elephants, buffaloes, and even giant forest hogs. The walks are open to visitors aged six and above and can be done after a gorilla trek or on a separate day.
How to Reach Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
By Air:
You can take a flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip near Kampala to either Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips, both located near different sectors of the Bwindi impenetrable national park. Flights take about 2 hours, and from the airstrips, you continue by road to your lodge.
By Road:
From Kampala or Entebbe, you can drive to Bwindi through Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale, or Kisoro. The journey takes around 9–10 hours, but it offers scenic views of Uganda’s countryside, hills, and farmlands.
From Rwanda:
Bwindi is also easily reached from Kigali, Rwanda. The road drive takes 4 to 5 hours through the Cyanika border for Kisoro side and Katuna border for the side of Kibale
